Scripting It.

Wed Aug 1, 2007, 10:19 PM
Going to comic con reminded me that I've been meaning to write a OGN for some time, so I hacked out a couple pages of script today to start off a time travel story. Always been a big fan of time travellers, but the last 2 years or so have really picked up in the sub-genre's popularity. Mainly Doctor Who, Tony Scott's "Deja Vu" and the excellent indy flick "Primer". So I'm finally having a go and don't hate it yet, so we'll see. If only I can coerce Felipe Sobreiro [link] to illustrate this fuckin' thing. Here's the chunk I punched out today, formatting be damned:

INT. LAB - NIGHT

A BATTERED LAB, MESSY FROM MANIC WORK IN THE LAST HOURS OF A PROJECT. BITS OF MACHINERY ARE SCATTERED ABOUT, HACKED TOGETHER FROM SCRAPS. LOOKS LIKE PILES OF EXTRA COMPLEX 'MAKE' MAGAZINE PROJECTS.

AT THE BACK OF THE LAB IS A MAN (MID 30S, LEAN, GLASSES) LEANING OVER A WORKBENCH, FOCUSING ON HIS WORK.

HE SOLDERS THE LAST WIRE INTO PLACE ON A CIRCUIT BOARD.

SETS DOWN THE SOLDERING IRON AND PICKS UP A LIT CIGARETTE.

TAKES A LONG DRAG.

OVER HIS SHOULDER WE SEE THE FULL CASING FOR HIS PROJECT, A BLACK BOX ABOUT 2'X 1' X 7" DEEP, LID OPEN, WITH SEVERAL SMALL LCD SCREENS, LIGHTS AND A FEW NOBS AT EITHER END OF THE CONTROL PANEL. HE EXHALES THE SMOKE. (See diagram attached with script.)

PAGE TWO

THE MAN STARTS TO FLIP SWITCHES ON THE DEVICE.

THE LCD SCREENS DISPLAY ALL ZEROES.

HE FLIPS UP THE SAFETY GUARD ON THE MASTER BUTTON.

HESITATING, HE WIPES SWEAT FROM HIS FOREHEAD.

HIS FINGER HOVERS OVER THE BUTTON FOR A MOMENT THEN...

... HE PRESSES IT.

SEEMINGLY RANDOM NUMBERS SCROLL ACROSS THE LCD SCREENS.

HIS MOUTH CONTORTS INTO A LARGE GRIN.

A RED L.E.D. COMES ON BRIGHT.

PAGE THREE

THE MAN'S EYES WIDEN IN SURPRISE.

SPARKS FLY OUT OF THE CIRCUITRY AS THE CREATOR COVERS HIS FACE WITH HIS FOREARM.

HE GRASPS AT THE KNOBS BUT THE EXTREME HEAT INSTANTLY BLISTER HIS FINGERS.

NO IDEA WHAT TO DO HE GRABS THE CASE BY BOTH ENDS AND LIFTS IT OVER HIS HEAD, PREPARING TO SMASH IT.

ELECTRICITY FLOWS DOWN HIS ARMS FROM THE CASE.

THE VEINS IN HIS ARMS SWELL AS THE BLOOD INSIDE BEGINS TO BOIL AND STEAM POURS OFF HIS SKIN.

PAGE FOUR

HE DROPS TO HIS KNEES, HIS HANDS NOW WELDED TO THE CASE. ENERGY STILL FLOWS INTO HIM.

CLOSE UP - HIS EYES BLEEDING AND ELECTRICITY ARCHING ACROSS HIS TEETH, HE SCREAMS.

HIS WHOLE BODY GLOWS WITH ENERGY.

PAGE FIVE

SUDDENLY HE IS GONE, PULLED INTO A SINGULAR DOT OF LIGHT, NOTHING LEFT OF HIM OR THE CASE OTHER THEN SMOKE AND A BURNT SPOT ON THE CONCRETE FLOOR WHERE HE WAS KNEELING.

SITTING ON A DESK IS A HOME BUILT COMPUTER, SCREEN SAVER RUNNING.

NEXT TO THE COMPUTER, FACING WHERE THE ACTION TOOK PLACE, SITS A WEBCAM.

PAGE SIX

TITLE AND CREDITS OVER A SPLASH PAGE WITH THE WHOLE ROOM, NOW TOTALLY EMPTY OF LIFE.
